It's kind of hard to believe that the XFL is coming back in 2020, but with each passing day, we get a little closer to Vince McMahon's second attempt at starting a professional football league.
During an event at MetLife Stadium, Vince McMahon and league commissioner Oliver Luck revealed Dallas, St. Louis, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Washington D.C. will be the first XFL cities.
In terms of selecting host cities for the XFL's first season, it was noted that more than 30 cities and venues expressed interest in participating, and that the league was looking for dedicated long-term partners rather than just a buildings to rent. For now, the Jets and Giants better prepare themselves for some new offseason tennants. Luck promised a quicker pace of play with the overall goal of keeping games under three hours.
On the heels of Tuesday's NHL expansion announcement, Seattle was announced as one of the eight inaugural cities to begin play when the new XFL football league kicks off in 2020.
McMahon sold WWE shares worth $100 million to bankroll the XFL's relaunch. Luck says they want to listen to fans and say they already have great ideas from them.
McMahon is "personally funding" the new leaugue.
Luck says they will look for the best coaches and players available and majority will have college and National Football League experience. When NFL teams make their final cuts in the fall, he said, about 900 football players are suddenly on the market. "We plan to invite those players to try out for the XFL".
One day after the long-awaited announcement that Seattle will be getting an National Hockey League franchise, the city is also going to be the site of one of the eight franchises in the rebooted XFL. The XFL will have a 10-week regular schedule, 45-man active rosters and two semifinal playoff games.
