GRAMMYs 2019: Listen to All of the Album of the Year Nominees

61st annual Grammy Awards nominations to be announced Friday

Rapper Kendrick Lamar leads Grammy award nominations with 8 nods, Drake has 7

In 2018, female artists occupied just five of the 20 slots in the fancy categories. Brandi Carlile, Cardi B, H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monáe and Kacey Musgraves joined the hip-hop stars in the album of the year category.

So who are some of the top nominee's?

Unlike the standouts from Kendrick Lamar's "Black Panther" soundtrack, without the conjoint viewing experience, "Shallow" looses its poignancy and power. His most recent loss was in February, when his critically praised DAMN fell short to Bruno Mars' 24K Magic.

Lamar's Top ten hit, the SZA-assisted "All the Stars", is nominated for both record and song of the year.

Ella Mai's Boo'd Up and Shawn Mendes' In My Blood earned song of the year nominations, while Post Malone's Rockstar and Cardi B's I Like It, featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, complete the nominees for record of the year.

"Each of this year's nominees is deserving of this honour and I look forward to the announcement of the victor in the new year", Grange said.

He didn't run away with the crown, though, as Drake was right behind him with seven nominations of his own.

The Black Panther soundtrack, which he was heavily involved in, was nominated for Album Of The Year, while the score was nominated for Score Soundtrack For Visual Media.

Folk singer Brandi Carlile has bagged six nominations, while Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino (Donald Glover's musical alter-ego) and Cardi B each have five.

In the new-artist class, female musicians dominate even more: Margo Price, Jorja Smith, H.E.R., Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and sister duo Chloe x Halle are all busy preparing their possible acceptance speeches.

Having secured four Grammy nominations, Greta Van Fleet is officially overhyped.

Women performers were underrepresented in the top four categories and in the awards broadcast at the Grammys earlier this year, but will have a strong presence at the upcoming show. The Grammy Academy announced 900 additional members to the voting committee as a second step in its diversity efforts.

Beck's newest music has been mostly just fine.

Led by University of Toronto professor Anna Shternshis, the archival music project The Lost Songs of World War II is in the running for world music album.

At least Kanye West and Taylor Swift won't be dueling at this year's Grammy Awards. As well, Drake collaborators Boi-1da and Noah Shebib were nominated for their production work. Childish Gambino is a one time victor.

But that doesn't mean her debut studio album, "Invasion of Privacy", necessarily deserves the high praise. The Recording Academy better put some respect on our name. The Carters earned two nods in the R&B category along with best music video, while Grande picked up two nods in pop. However, like every other year, there are still some surprises, as well as major snubs.

Several of Drake's associates also landed Grammy recognition.

Her latest album was only nominated for one award, best pop vocal album. Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Fred Armisen, Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt are up for best comedy album.

No Canadians were nominated for best comedy album.
