GOLDEN SURPRISES & SNUBS: Noms kick off award season!

Sandra Oh, Andy Samberg to co-host Globes

Andy Samberg & Sandra Oh Are Hosting The Golden Globes, The Good Award Show

The other movies nominated for a Golden Globe in the best musical or comedy category are Crazy Rich Asians, Green Book, The Favourite and Disney's Mary Poppins Returns. The trendy "Twilight Zone"-inspired drama "Homecoming" scored 3 nominations, for best drama series and for lead actors Julia Roberts (who missed a drama film actress nod for "Ben Is Back") and up-and-comer Stephan James as therapist and patient in a spooky Florida rehab facility".

Benedict Cumberbatch was also shortlisted for playing Patrick Melrose in the Sky Atlantic drama of the same name based on Edward St Aubyn's novels, as was Thandie Newton, for Westworld.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's much admired semi-autobiographical black-and-white film "Roma", for streaming service Netflix NFLX.O , was nominated in the foreign language category.

Actors Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg have been announced as hosts of the 2019 Golden Globes. That's just one of the snubs and surprises of this year's nominations, though.

NBC, the TV home of the Golden Globe Awards for the past 23 years, did not officially become the network for the 2019 awards until September when it closed a new eight-year deal with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and dick clark productions to keep the show. She will also be the first Canadian to host the Globes.

British actress Olivia Colman won a best actress nod for her turn as a petulant Queen Anne in the Fox Searchlight FOXA.O historical romp "The Favourite", along with supporting stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. It earned six nominations, including best comedy or musical, best actor and best director.

Granted, the results of awards balloting can be largely symbolic, and are seldom the best way to measure progress. It's not that Reilly was completely off our radar, but we never imagined his nomination - for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy - would be for this Laurel and Hardy romp. Each of the shows also nabbed acting awards, leaving little room for returning nominees.

Late-night talk show host Seth Meyers hosted the last Golden Globes while previous hosts have included British comedian Ricky Gervais as well as comedy actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. As the first major award show following the Harvey Weinstein revelations and subsequent launch of the #MeToo movement, the usually more frivolous ceremony had an atypical edge of seriousness.
