In keeping with presidential tradition, a detailed schedule of the funeral and memorial services for former President George H.W. Bush was released Saturday evening, with ceremonies planned in Houston; Washington, D.C.; and Spring, and College Station, Texas.

"Dear Bill", George H.W. Bush scribbled January 20, 1993, to the Democrat about to succeed him as president.

Bush, who died on Friday in Houston at the age of 94, is to be honored with a state funeral in Washington's twin-spired National Cathedral, with President Donald Trump and his wife Melania to attend, the White House has confirmed.

"There will be very tough times, made even more hard by criticism you may not think is fair", Bush 41 wrote, perhaps in anticipation of the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, as some people have noticed.

Mr Bush served as the 41st USA president between 1989 and 1993, and oversaw the first Gulf War.

"And he cocked one eye open and quipped, 'Well, you better hurry", James Baker recalled Sunday as he described the 41st president's final hours of life.

His passing ushers in almost a week of remembrances and tributes in Washington, where Bush will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol following a ceremony there Monday evening.

In August 2015, Trump tweeted a dig at the presidency of George H.W. Bush, writing: "The last thing we need is another Bush in the White House". He credited Bush's ability to negotiate with former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev as playing a key role. The patriarch of a political dynasty, he fathered another president, his son George W. Bush, and a two-term governor and presidential candidate, Jeb Bush. "President Bush was a true friend of the National Football League and a genuine fan who understood the power of sports to bring people together", National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement posted on Twitter on Saturday.

"President Bush guided our nation and the world to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War", the Trumps wrote. Whenever I was with him I saw his absolute joy for life and true pride in his family.

Suffering from Parkinson's disease, Bush had been wheelchair-bound and in failing health.

North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes: "Last night we lost a great man. George Herbert Walker Bush was a man of honor and character". Even Prescott Sheldon Bush came up short in his first his bid for political office, when he ran for the U.S. Senate in 1950. Bush's remains will lie in state in the rotunda until Wednesday morning.

Tributes to "Bush Senior" have been pouring in online after his twenty-five-year-old kind-hearted note to Bill Clinton was circulated on the internet.
