A gunman killed 12 people including a sheriff's deputy after he walked into a Southern California bar and started shooting late on Wednesday night, police said.

Sgt. Helus, a 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, died when he ran into the Borderline bar to confront the gunman, officials said.

Sergeant Buschow said he had "no doubt" that Sergeant Helus and a highway patrol officer who joined him at the scene of the shooting had saved lives. But Sheriff Dean has since said that the gunman died at the scene. He gave his all.

Prior to getting the call to respond to the shooting, Helus was speaking with his wife on the phone, said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean.

He was one of the first officers through the door of the bar, according to CNN, but died at the hands of the gunman who killed 11 others.

Kuredjian confirmed at a news conference early Thursday, Nov. 8 that a sheriff's deputy was taken to a hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, but did not provide information on the extent of the victims' injuries.

Other witnesses described seeing and hearing people smashing windows with barstools to create escape routes from the bar.

Ventura County sheriff's spokesman Captain Garo Kuredjian said a procession was set for 10 a.m.to take Helus' body from Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks to the examiner's office in Ventura.

On Wednesday night, students gathered for college country night between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the bar's website.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean briefs reporters at the intersection of United States 101 freeway and the Moorpark Rad exit as police vehicles close off the area responding to a shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 8, 2018. Because it was the bars' weekly College Country Night, many of Ian's victims were students of Pepperdine University. He added that they have no reason to think there was a link to terrorism, "but we certainly will look at that option".

He added that Long had had previous contact with law enforcement.

The station said one person was seen - apparently lifeless - on the ground outside the bar's entrance.

Thirteen people were killed in a shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, including the shooter and Helus. A crisis intervention specialist was called to his house and talked to him, but left without taking him into custody, Dean said.

A witness told KABC-TV that there were many young people "having a great time" in the bar when a man entered and "started shooting".

Long was "the victim of a battery" at a bar in Thousand Oaks in January 2015, Dean said.

"You just don't expect it to happen in Thousand Oaks".
