Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs and Freddie Freeman of the Braves tied for the NL Gold Glove award at first. The manager got a hero's welcome, starting with a greeting by Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló at the airport.
Former South Carolina baseball star Jackie Bradley Jr. was named the American League's best defensive center fielder on Sunday night, capping off a magical 2018 season in which he was also named the ALCS MVP en route to helping his Boston Red Sox capture a World Series title.
"Now in our 61st year of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, this year's honorees are well deserved and truly define defensive excellence", said Mike Thompson, chief marketing officer for Rawlings Sporting Goods.
Balloting for the Gold Glove Award includes votes from each manager and six coaches from their staff who can not vote for players from their own team, and a sabermetric component accounts for 25 percent of the overall voting total. (He leads all outfielders in that category since joining the Braves in 2016.) The only other outfielders in franchise history to capture at least three straight Gold Gloves: Hank Aaron, Dale Murphy and Andruw Jones. Additionally, no Toronto Blue Jay placed in the top 25 of top AL qualified players by SDI. Jason Heyward and Javier Baez were also finalists at their respective positions. But if the Gold Glove was his final achievement as an Astro, then it is not a bad way to go out. First baseman Matt Olson and third baseman Matt Chapman were recognized for the Athletics, and second baseman D.J. LeMahieu and third baseman Nolan Arenao won for the Rockies. Kansas City's Alex Gordon earned the honor in left field, the sixth of his career.
