He is the 293rd cricketer to represent India in Test cricket and at the age of 18 years 329 days Shaw became India's second youngest opener after Vijay Mehra, who was 17 years 265 days at Bombay's Brabourne Stadium against the Kiwis in Dec 1955.
Shaw became India's second-youngest century maker after Sachin Tendulkar as he reached three figures early in the second session. Prithvi also got the opportunity to bat with his skipper Virat Kohli in his very first match.
India had elected to bat in the first of the two Tests. With India struggling to find the right opening combination in recent times, Shaw might be the flawless solution for India's troubles at the top.
Chesteshwar Pujara added 86 and captain Virat Kohli was 71 not out, as India notched its highest test total in a day's play against the West Indies.
He became the second youngest to score a century for India in Tests after Tendulkar. Barring Gabriel, the other bowlers failed to hit the right line and length to Shaw and that allowed the young batsman to play to his strength.
Shaw, however, continued batting with confidence and his first boundary came in the second over bowled by Keemo Paul, another back foot punch towards the point boundary. "It was a good challenge for me and I think I did well", he added. Overall, he faced 137 balls and hit only four boundaries, not the most fluent knock by the world's No 1-ranked test batsman. Roach will be absent as he has flown back to attend a family issue and the lack of top-quality spinners is a cause for concern.
Other Indian luminaries lined up to tweet his praise including former Test batsman VVS Laxman, who said Shaw had a "bright future" in the game. In the third session, Kohli and Rahane stitched a 105-run stand to take the team past 300.
Indian vice-captain Rahane though lost his cool against off-spinner Roston Chase to get caught behind in the final few overs of the day.
