After weeks of seriously contemplating his future in Minnesota, Butler requested a trade from the Timberwolves and informed Thibodeau of his decision on Tuesday in a meeting in Los Angeles, league sources told The Athletic.
After earlier reports of discontent on behalf of Butler with his teammates' immaturity was only exacerbated by "contractual matters" which led to Wednesday's trade request.
The max contract that the Timberwolves could offer Butler could be worth five years and $189 million.
Butler has been unhappy with the Timberwolves since being traded from the Bulls in June 2017, leading to a breaking point with training camp beginning next week. His three preferred destinations are the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the New York Knicks, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The rift between Butler and Timberwolves' All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns, as well as Andrew Wiggins, seems to be a major reason why Butler is likely to be traded before the start of the season. "Therefore a team acquiring Butler would not need to utilize cap space in the 2019-20 season for such a contract". Now, he's got only one year left on his deal and may not re-sign with your team if you aren't on his shortlist, which only further hurts his value.
Butler's unhappiness is just the latest issue to befall Minnesota over the past few months. Now he also must balance the possibility of Butler leaving, and how the franchise should best handle that.
