Barquin was a top golfer in Spain as a teenager and came to Iowa State to pursue her career, drawn by its facilities, coaches, and picturesque campus.

Per the Iowa State Daily, both teams will wear helmet decals honoring the slain Iowa State golfer found dead on a golf course in Ames on Monday. Police said the 22-year-old had "several stab wounds to the upper torso, head and neck" and appeared to have been attacked in what authorities believe was a random act of violence.

Police in Ames subsequently detained a 22-year-old man, named as Collin Daniel Richards, who has been charged with first-degree murder after the discovery of Barquín's body last Monday morning.

"Yes, she was an wonderful golfer, yes she was a terrific engineering student, yes she even died a horrific death, but this doesn't capture who she was".

Swedish golfing great Annika Sorenstam called the murder "horrendous", as she posted a picture of herself alongside Barquin after she won the 2018 European Ladies' Amateur Championship in Slovakia in July. Ames police said she had been "assaulted".

Police found bloody clothes belonging to Richards, but DNA test results had not been returned yet, Huff said.

Richards was sent to prison past year only after he tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, failed to complete an anger-management course he started four times and didn't pay court-ordered fees to a halfway house, court records show.

Athletic Director Jamie Pollard was overcome with emotion as he addressed the media Tuesday on losing a member of the Cyclone family.

That man told investigators Richards had said in recent days that he had "an urge to rape and kill a woman", the complaint said.

Her former team announced Tuesday it was pulling out of the East & West Match Play in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to be with friends and family and to grieve their loss. In one case, the Iowa State Patrol seized a long knife from him during a traffic stop.

"We are all devastated", Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens added.

Richards once threatened to "shoot up" a convenience store where he was caught shoplifting.
