Furyk announced at a news conference tonight that Woods, Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau are the first three of his wildcard picks.

DeChambeau jumped clear with three consecutive birdies from the seventh hole en route to a four-under-par 67 at TPC Boston in MA.

Under PGA Tour rules, players are allowed to opt out of a pro-am twice a year in exchange for doing some other sponsor-related activity such as a clinic or a Q&A session.

"He's facing the biggest and best fields", Rose said. Finau and DeChambeau were viewed as 50-50 possibilities, before each performed well in the first two FedEx Cup Playoff events - with DeChambeau winning both tournaments and Finau finishing second in The Northern Trust in New Jersey and tying for fourth in the Dell Technologies Championship in MA.

"I wouldn't have written it any better, to be honest with you", DeChambeau said.

"I haven't been part of the team playing-wise for six years", said the 42-year-old, who will be playing his eighth Ryder Cup.

"He's won three times so far under the age of 25, which is pretty impressive", Woods said on Sunday after being paired with DeChambeau.

"People can put that title on me, but I'm not going to". I got the call from Jim and he asked if I would serve as a vice-captain and I said 'Absolutely'. The idea is to find the hottest player to fill out the team, and no one has been close to DeChambeau over the last two weeks.

After starting the year at No. 99 in the world, DeChambeau moved to No. 7 with the win Monday, one spot past Rory McIlroy. Smith was third at 13-under, a bogey at the final hole knocking him out of contention. The small consolation for Ancer was moving from No. 92 to No. 56, which at least made him among the top 70 who advance to the BMW Championship at Aronimink.

Phil Mickelson has also been named as a wildcard pick by Jim Furyk and 'Lefty's experience will undoubtedly aid Ryder Cup rookie, Bryson DeChambeau, whose scintillating recent form sees him make up the third wildcard pick.

Finau is hoping to become a Ryder Cup rookie, but he already has worldwide experience after playing in the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004 and '06.

Mickelson's record does not make for any better reading, the five-time major victor winning 18, losing 20 and halving seven of his 45 matches. Finau tied a PGA Championship record with 10 birdies in the second round while playing with Furyk.
