"I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties", Seagal tweeted.
According to the press release, Seagal will also asked to influence matters "in the sphere of culture, public and youth exchanges" between both nations.
"It is the case when people's diplomacy meets halfway traditional diplomacy", the ministry said in the statement. "As for worldwide practice, you can draw a parallel with the functions of United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors".
President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to Seagal in 2016, saying he hoped it would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were beginning to improve. He often comes to Russian Federation, repeatedly expressing his affection for the country.
Long before Seagal and Putin became buds, the dual citizen tried in jest to influence the Russian president's reputation overseas.
He is also one of the Hollywood stars accused by several women of sexual misconduct in the wake of the #MeToo campaign, which he has denied.
President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to speak out against Russian Federation or President Vladimir Putin, and the addition to Steven Seagal into the mix isn't going to help matters. 'I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially'.
Seagal received Russian citizenship back in 2016, where he's been outspoken in his defence of Putin, even calling him a "great, great, great world leader, maybe, the greatest".
According to Seagal's own website, the 66-year-old has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation for over a decade.
Seagal's films, which often highlight his martial arts skills, are popular in Europe.
