With the fire still burning and containment only at 30 percent, the Mendocino Complex could top the Thomas Fire that burned in Southern California late past year to become the largest in state history.

One of the wildfires, the "Carr fire" near Redding, California, on the Sacramento River about 120 miles south of the OR border, has claimed seven lives, destroyed more than 1,000 homes and scarred more than 163,200 acres, according to CAL FIRE. Officials say the flames threaten more than 9,000 structures.

This puts them at the number two spot on the list of largest wildfires in state history.

The wildfire about 225 miles (360 kilometers) north of San Francisco started more than two weeks ago by sparks from the steel wheel of a towed-trailer's flat tire. The fire was 43% contained as of late Sunday, according to Cal Fire.

The 200 troops, plus command and support staff, will get one day of classroom training from firefighters at JBLM this week and then two more days of field training once it's decided which of the 18 major wildfires burning across California they will be asked to help contain. Fueled by low humidity, triple-digit temperatures and winds blowing across wide swaths of tinder-dry vegetation, the conflagration has expanded to three counties, surrounded an entire river and parts of neighboring reservoirs, and destroyed and damaged almost 170 homes and other structures.

For the period from January 1 through July 29, 2018, there were 3,770 California wildfires.

Another major fire also burning in Northern California, the Ferguson Fire, extended into its third week. New evacuations were ordered in neighboring Glenn and Colusa counties, including an area just east of the boundary of Mendocino National Forest.

"California wildfires are being magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized", Trump wrote on Twitter.
