Courtney Smith also provided threatening texts she claims came from her ex-husband, former assistant Zach Smith.
After firing Smith last week, Meyer told reporters that he had been aware of the alleged 2009 incident and that he and his wife, Shelley, had advised Zach and Courtney to go to counseling at the time.
Football practice starts on Friday, with offensive coordinator Ryan Day serving as the interim coach.
"Gene (Smith) and I agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion", Meyer said in a statement. As you got deeper and deeper into the story it got progressively worse, and since then I haven't seen any indication that from that school or from anyone else that he is.
Buckeyes alumni weren't all supportive of Meyer, however.
Meyer told reporters at Big Ten media days on July 24 that he knew nothing about the allegations. Coach Jim Tressel was sacked in 2011 for lying to the NCAA and university of about rules violations committed by some of his players. The deal runs through 2022 and increases Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018, with annual 6 percent raises for the bulk of his compensation. In that exchange, Lindsey Voltolini said Meyer spoke with Smith, and the assistant "denied everything". In 2009, Smith was arrested on a charge that Courtney Smith later dropped.
Separately, a court hearing for Zach Smith was postponed Thursday on a domestic protection order sought by his ex-wife.
In 2012, Meyer returned to coaching at Ohio State, taking over a storied program in his home state after another national championship-winning coach, Jim Tressel, was forced out for lying to the school and the NCAA about violations committed by his players. Most troubling, that includes an alleged incident of domestic abuse on October 25, 2015, shortly before the couple divorced. "I was never told about anything and nothing ever came to light".
