Suarez will hope to make amends for that thoroughly underwhelming display on Wednesday, when Uruguay's all-time leading scorer and sixth most-capped player will make his 100th senior global appearance in Rostov-on-Don against a lowly Saudi team that looked woeful as they were thrashed 5-0 by hosts Russian Federation on the opening day of the tournament.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, RUSSIA-With a single goal, Luis Suarez settled the fate of four teams in the group stage of the World Cup. However, a Saudi Arabia victory will make the final group game for them and Uruguay the determining factor for advancing.

Suarez's goal and Uruguay's win also effectively ended Egypt's hopes of fighting its way back into contention for a berth in the Round of 16, meaning Mohamed Salah's World Cup looks set to end after just three matches.

Suarez tapped in midway through the first half after keeper Mohammed Al-Owais failed to grab the ball on a corner.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani came close to emulating Suarez by scoring in a third World Cup, but his low shot was smothered by the onrushing Al-Owais.

Egypt coach Hector Cuper admitted that Monday's final Group A game in the 2018 World Cup against Saudi Arabia is nearly certain to be a matter of regional pride and not much else.

They will face each other on Monday in Samara with first place in Group A on the line.

Uruguay beat a 48-year curse of failing to win a World Cup finals opener on Friday, but needed an 89th-minute header to do so.

"We still have a game to play against Saudi Arabia and we will give our all in that game but our chances (of going to the second round) are minimal", Cuper said.

Suarez, who became the sixth Uruguay player to reach the century mark, tallied the only goal for La Celeste in the 23rd minute in front of 42,678 fans at the Rostov Arena.

Uruguay's Edinson Cavani wasted numerous chances, including one in the 14th minute when he skied a half volley over the bar.

Saudi Arabia also had to play most of the match without trusted midfielder Taisser Aljassam, who limped off before halftime with an injury after lunging forward for a challenge.
