In Paris, Macron's office said it wouldn't make sense and pointed out that the latest country to impose economic sanctions on Russian Federation was the US Italy's new premier, Giuseppe Conte, tweeted that he agreed with Trump, saying: "Russia should go back into the G-8".

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed during a visit to Austria this week the possibility of Vienna playing host to a summit with his USA counterpart Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Saturday.

"Various cities, which can be suitable for a meeting between the two presidents, are often considered". On Friday morning, he appeared in no hurry to leave for Canada, walking out of the White House more than half an hour late and answering questions from reporters for almost 20 minutes.

"However, there are no specific agreements, specific understandings or specific discussion at the moment".

Trudeau has said the Quebec summit offers the G7 leaders an opportunity to find solutions to their many differences.

"This has been an ongoing project of Ambassador Huntsman, stretching back months, of getting a formal meeting between Putin and Trump", the official told the Journal.

Mr Trump plans to leave the summit early and will skip G7 meetings about climate change, clean energy and ocean protection.

While Donald Trump is in Canada getting the cold shoulder from G7 leaders, Russian President Vladimir Putin is receiving accolades in China.

Conte, who is attending his first summit, had earlier indicated that he was in favor of Trump's proposal to welcome Russian Federation back into an organization from which it was frozen out after annexing Crimea in 2014.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said she found it "sad" that Mr. Trump used national security as the excuse to impose the tariffs on Canada and Europe, which are part of NATO, while Canada is a partner with the United States in the the North American Aerospace Defence Command.

The expert also noted that during the Crimea occupation back in 2014, women and children were put in front of Russian troops as the latter started blocking Ukrainian Navy and Army bases in Crimea.

"We have massive trade deficits with nearly every country, we will straighten that out", Trump said.

Aside from the United States, the G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Britain.

However, new Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte threw his weight behind Trump's call for Russian Federation to be included, saying in a tweet it would be "in the interests of everyone".

"Russia should return to the G8".

The summit has already been dubbed the "G6 plus one" due to Mr Trump's isolation over trade and his decision to pull the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal.

At any rate, we are ready for this.

"Russia is focused on other formats, apart from the G7", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a brief statement reported by the government-controlled Sputnik news agency.
