It was a bold call for a holiday break that's typically spent traveling or lounging out in the sun, and sadly, Han and his crew struggled.

But the film, with a cast including Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, was falling short not only in North America, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations predicted, but also overseas.

The second standalone "Star Wars" anthology film has received mixed reviews.

However, Howard had a huge task ahead when he took on the movie as it had already been given a release date of May 25, 2018. "This is a spinoff with established characters that still has a shot at a $100 million or more opening".

There are several theories on why Solo might have bombed. Unlike any "Star Wars" release before, "Solo" was deemed - gasp - skippable. In four weeks, the Magnolia and Participant Media film has grossed an impressive $6 million. The current record holder is 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at $139.8 million. While a steady diet of Star Wars may be great for those who can't get enough of the galaxy far, far away, it is way too much in too short of a time for the general public.

What did you think of Solo: A Star Wars Story?

Ehrenreich has a big job because he's doing an impression of a beloved Star Wars lead. C-3PO is trying to interpret the Millennium Falcon for Han Solo and says "Sir, I don't know where your ship learned to communicate, but it has the most peculiar dialect".

Years later, a more experienced Luke repeated this plan, this time to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi. Other franchise newcomers like Daisy Ridley and Felicity Jones played brand new roles and weren't expected to live up to a previous performer.

Meanwhile, "Avengers: Infinity War" earned $32.5 million in 36 territories over the three-day weekend. "We're encouraged by the response that people have had to the film".

Disney disagrees, noting that Marvel films come out at even shorter intervals - Thor: Ragnarok in November, Black Panther in February and Infinity War last month.

Estimates for "Solo: A Star Wars Story" are continuing to fly low.

For now, Disney is playing it safe by keeping the Star Wars tradition going.
