To say the video politically charged is an understatement: "This Is America" is a confronting look at gun violence, police brutality, and the fractured social state in the USA right now.
"This Is America" is a confronting look at gun violence, Black Lives Matter, and police brutality.
And if that wasn't enough, Gambino also released a new visual collaboration with Hiro Murai called "This Is America". The underlying message - stay woke and don't give into distractions.
Donald Glover doubled up as Childish Gambino to perform twice on this week's episode. The guns used in the clip are treated with care, with well-dressed men appearing to whisk them away on red cloth, while black bodies lie where they fell in the background. Each time there's a gun-related tragedy, we grieve, debate and then go back to smiling and dancing until it happens again.
"This Is America, don't catch you slippin" though", Glover raps. The music turns from joy to bloodbath to joy again. "This Is America" references numerous country's recent mass shootings from the Charleston, SC church shootings to Florida's Stoneman Douglas High School.
A new album is expected later this year, with Glover set to appear in fall wit Rae Sremmurd and Vince Staples.
The music video, which is set in a large warehouse, also features a shirtless Glover.
This Is America marks Gambino's first new piece of music since his Grammy-nominated album Awaken, My Love! was released at the end of 2016. And we can't wait to hear the whole thing!
