PlayStation 5 unlikely to be released before 2020

Sony Might Roll Out the Next Generation PlayStation 5 This Year

Sony might announce the new version of PlayStation this year

However, there is no information regarding the hardware and other features of the upcoming Sony PlayStation 5 console and the company is yet to make any statement about the PlayStation 5. "[The sources] both told me that the next PlayStation is unlikely to release in 2019, let alone 2018, although they were careful to be clear that these plans are always shifting", the report from Jason Schreier reads. However, plans can change. They mentioned that the release date could be moved to a later date and Sony is apparently just trying to find the right moment to release its new hardware for maximum profit and exposure. The people he spoke with have not heard of plans for the next-generation console, which should not be the case if it will indeed be launching soon.

After the recent SemiAccurate report, Kotaku has investigated the possibility that a PlayStation 5 could be coming in 2018 or 2019, ruling it out based on the different sources it was able to communicate with during and after the GDC.

"On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward, said one source". At some point, Sony's probably looked at every possible date.

Reports as well said that Sony is allowing only a few selected people to get their hands on the devkits, and has asked studios to lock those in a room.

Over the last couple of weeks, some wild rumors have been floating around suggesting that PlayStation 5 dev kits are already in the wild, with the console set to release either this year or next year.

One interesting thing Schreier did learn is that most think the PlayStation 5 will run games that won't run on PlayStation 4 - another incremental, backwards compatible upgrade isn't expected.

There had been reports recently that Sony may come up with PlayStation 5 by this year, but that's not really happening.

The PlayStation is one of the best gaming consoles available in the market and has direct competition from Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

The PlayStation 4 Pro came out in November 2016, and Xbox One X released in November previous year.
