K-pop doesn't mean Kim Jong-un pop, or does it?

Kim Jong Un Attends South Korean Pop Concert in Pyongyang

One of the kpop artists that performed were South Korea's legends such as Red Velvet.

South Korean singers held a rehearsal yesterday afternoon at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre where the concert began at 0830 GMT, according to South Korean pool photos.

Pool TV footage also showed Kim, clad in a dark Mao-style suit, clapping from the second-floor VIP stand as South Korean Culture Minister Do Jong-hwan bowed and greeted North Korean spectators looking on from the first floor.

"When such good atmosphere is preserved carefully and continuously, only the handsome spring when new buds sprout and flowers blossom and the rich autumn when the crops are abundant will always be in the way of our fellow countrymen", Kim said, according to North Korean media.

Sunday's K-pop performance and its subsequent celebration by North Korean media add to the complexity of North Korean diplomacy that has emerged in recent months. As reported by AP, these materials are smuggled into North Korea via flash drives across the border with China. Kim followed up by agreeing to a summit with the South's President Moon Jae-in, and reportedly to another with US President Donald Trump.

The trip was Kim's first foreign visit after resuming office in 2011.

The recent thaw, which could see the first-ever summit between sitting US and North Korean leaders by the end of May, follows months of soaring tensions as the North conducted its most powerful nuclear test and launched more than 20 missiles - including two intermediate-range weapons that flew over Japan and another long-range missile that experts say puts the whole of the United States in striking distance.

But it's the shifts in technology since the early-2000s that may be giving this year's musical extravaganza more impact, Dong-a University's Kang says.

In previous years K-pop, which has a global following, has been used by Seoul in a very different capacity. Smuggled across the border on USB sticks and bootleg DVDs, K-pop has spread widely among the families of North Korea's political elite, Kang said.

Kim also talked about girl band Red Velvet.

"Many wanted to know if I would come to see Red Velvet".

Though South Korean artists have previously performed in North Korea, no North Korean leader had ever attended a performance until Sunday. Before Sunday's performance, South Korea last sent a pop singer to North Korea in 2005.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju popped into a Pyongyang gig by visiting K-pop stars, and apparently enjoyed the performance.

Full video of the performance wasn't immediately available.

The North Korean audience clapped, cheered, sang along to some of the songs and later presented the South Korean performers with bouquets.

The young North Korean leader "was deeply moved to see our people sincerely acclaiming the performance, deepening the understanding of the popular art of the south side", according to North Korea state news agency KCNA.

His planned inter-Korean summit with Moon on April 27 is expected to pave the way for a similar meeting with Trump, who wants Kim to abandon his nuclear weapons.

Taekwondo athletes also staged a performance before an audience of 2,300 in Pyongyang today ahead of a joint display of the Korean martial art with the North's practitioners tomorrow. "This time the concert was under the theme "Spring has come, ' let it be 'Autumn has come" in the next autumn".

Relationship between the two nations have improved vastly since the Winter Olympics, which took place earlier this year in Pyeongchang.
