Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' Earns $3.8M in Previews

'Ready Player One' VR experience: I'm not ready

Steven Spielberg wants America to feel good again with 'Ready Player One'

Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One is looking to come out of the Easter weekend the victor with a projected $42 million at the USA box office.

Over the last decade Steven Spielberg has consistently delivered award-winning historical dramas including Bridge of Spies, Lincoln and January's The Post.

There's widespread unemployment, the population is beset by poverty and people feel utterly hopeless.

Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline's novel of the same name, combines dystopian settings, romance, video games, and pop culture references to create a fun and original action-packed film.

"But when you escape from reality, you're also, in a way, divesting yourself of any real human contact". The story is entertaining with a bit of a social commentary. Did we find all the keys in the maze?

"RPO" follows the adventures of Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan, Cyclops in "X-Men: Apocalypse"), a Columbus, Ohio-area teen, who lives in an America where want - want for food, want for suitable shelter, want for happiness - represents the norm. "I always call my dad before I do stuff".

"There's always an intimacy with him", notes Sheridan, "which I think does disarm you". This message is also underscored by the film's romantic subplot between Wade and another gamer named Samantha (Olivia Cooke), who cultivate a romantic relationship in the Oasis long before meeting face-to-face.

That's because the highs of the film are so very, very high that you are practically giddy with the excitement it generates, while its lows repeatedly anchor the blockbuster and mean it always falls short of greatness.

"He put me at ease as much as he possibly could, but I was still having a panic attack!"

The victor takes control of the virtual playground, which risks falling into the hands of a money-grubbing tech corporation led by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn).

"I first saw Ben in the TV series Bloodline, which I was completely infatuated with", recalls the filmmaker. I was lucky enough to tag along with a fun group of friends, and together we made an excellent team! He spends his days hunting for a trio of Easter eggs hidden inside the OASIS by its late creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance).

Is he ever concerned about what vibes he must give off to be cast in such evil roles? The actors had a chance to say, "Okay, if I walk over there, there's the door and there's the DJ".

Especially because its script and shots are littered with charming tips of the hat and visual references to classic pieces of pop culture. Cinematography by Janusz Kaminski is hard to appreciate since "Ready Player One" is nearly an animated film.

"That's the great thing about this movie", he continues. A virtual disco scene stood out, Parzival (Wade's online alter-ego) and Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) floating amongst each other to the sounds of "Stayin" Alive'.

Ready Player One is set in 2045.

He added in an interview with The Associated Press: "This was a film that for me fulfilled all of my fantasies of the places I go in my imagination when I get out of town". Screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. They can create avatars of all shapes, sizes, species and genders.

"It has recently come to my attention that Carl's Jr. wants to rename their charbroiled sliders "SpielBurgers" and they're pretty good, but I'm passing", Spielberg said in a selfie video video. Otherwise, you're acting in a big white room with a bunch of digital cameras looking down at you.
