Trump's call with Putin came less than a week after the US issued financial sanctions against a St. Petersburg-based "troll farm" and Russian intelligence services that are alleged to have meddled in the 2016 election on the president's behalf.

However, Trump did congratulate Putin during the call. The election was tainted by reports of voting irregularities.
"The leaders spoke in favor of developing practical cooperation in different spheres, including on questions of how to ensure strategic stability and fight global terrorism", the Kremlin said in a statement.
According to a White House statement, the two leaders also discussed denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
