Now Illumination and Universal have revived the grouchy Grinch, releasing the first official trailer for their new 3D animated version of the classic tale which will come out this winter. He decides to disguise himself as Santa Claus and steal the entire holiday away from the good people of Who-ville.
This time around, Dr Seuss' grumpy hero will be portrayed by Doctor Strange actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, who seems to be channeling his inner Alan Rickman a couple of times in the trailer. He smashes an old lady's jam jar, steals from a man's supermarket basket and vomits into a jar of pickles.
If you've never celebrated Christmas or are somehow new to this planet, The Grinch centers on a cynical grouch who lives in a cave above the village of Who-ville.
The upcoming remake is an adaptation of Dr. Seuss' 1957 children picture book about the famous grump, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it's a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. But each year, his Who neighbors disrupt his tranquility with bigger, brighter and louder Christmas celebrations.
As Christmas approaches, Cindy-Lou's good-natured plans come increasingly into conflict with the Grinch's more nefarious plot.
The animated film will hit theater screens on 9 November this year. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? The trailer also features the Grinch and Max venturing into Whoville for some provisions, torturing the Whos - and being tortured by their Christmas decorations - along the way.
