The U.S. military said last week it launched airstrikes on Syrian government-backed troops after as many as 500 attackers began what appeared to be a coordinated assault on Syrian opposition forces accompanied by U.S. advisers in the province of Deir el-Zour.
The men were working for a private Russian company called Wagner, which has sent hundreds of private contractors to Syria to help both the Russian military and pro-regime forces, according to people who knew them.
The Pentagon has confirmed that it destroyed a pro-government tank in eastern Syria on Sunday, marking the second U.S. attack on Syrian forces in a week and raising concerns about a serious military confrontation in the country.

He also noted that there have been reports of exchanges of fire between Turkish and Syrian Government forces, and also between the United States-led coalition and pro-Syrian Government forces, with major loss of life.
The government controls the western side and the SDF the east.
"We fully support Israel's right to defend themselves, particularly against threats to their territory and their people", Harrigian said.
It's important to note that the U.S.is operating in Syria as an occupying force without any worldwide mandate, whereas the Russian military is operating in Syria at the behest of the Syrian government, as recognized by the United Nations.
Deir ez-Zor, Syria- Numerous Russian mercenaries were reportedly killed last week in US attack that has the potential to destabilize an already tumultuous situation.
They are thought to be among the 100 or so dead after the clash.
The Pentagon is claiming that Russian Federation lacks influence over Syrian forces including those that attacked Deir ez-Zor.
The Russian Defense Ministry insisted its troops weren't involved in the incident, saying 25 Syrian volunteers were wounded in the US strike.
Fifteen Russians employed in Syria by a private security company were killed when an unexplained explosion rocked an arms depot at their base in the war-torn country, a monitor said on Wednesday. "We immediately contacted the Russian officials on the deconfliction telephone line to alert them to the unprovoked attack on a known SDF and coalition position".
The Russian Defense Ministry said its troops weren't involved in the operation.
The Russians killed in the U.S. attack, whatever their actual number, are believed to have been military contractors employed by the Wagner Group, an outfit that has been described as Russia's equivalent to America's Blackwater. Those claims couldn't be verified.
The incident occurred in the province of Deir es-Zor.
