A 7th-grade student shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School in Jackson Township, Ohio.

A seventh-grader from Jackson Memorial Middle School was hospitalized after apparently shooting himself in the men's restroom at around 8 a.m., Jackson Township police said. Police did not say if the shooting was intentional or an accident.

'The Middle School and High School are on lockdown at this time, ' Jackson Local Schools said in a statement.

The school official tells The Independent newspaper that the student is being treated at a hospital. A school official told reporters the town's four elementary schools were closed and the town's high school was being evacuated.

School Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto said the school is still considering whether there will be classes Wednesday. Furthermore, local authorities said that the initial police presence was out of "an abundance of caution".

Students are in the process of being released to their parents. Parents rushed to Jackson Middle School, near Massillon, to pick up their children after the school sent out a notice about the shooting.
