The US report, titled the National Posture Review (NPR), was released on Friday and claims that developing smaller nuclear weapons would bolster its deterrent.

To respond to emerging threats to USA and its allies' security, the NPR specifically proposed the development for new models of "low-yield" weapons, which it said would be essential for a "flexible" nuclear arsenal that can enhance deterrence.

Iran accused the USA of threatening Russian Federation with new atomic weapons, after the Trump administration published a document outlining plans to expand its nuclear capabilities in order to deter others.

Another top Iranian leader, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, had also reportedly raised concern that such an approach by the US would increase the risk of "bringing humankind closer to annihilation".

Martin Schulz, who challenged Angela Merkel last September, called for remaining American bombs to be removed from Germany.

Iran says President Donald Trump's hostility to the 2015 nuclear deal is dampening foreign investment in the energy sector despite the lifting of sanctions.

The ultimatum put pressure on European Union powers - key backers and parties to the 2015 global agreement to curb Iranian nuclear ambition.
