A 5-0 thrashing of Besiktas in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie means Bayern have now won 14 games in a row to match a club milestone from 1980.

Robert Lewandowski has scored 17 goals in his last 16 Champions League appearances at the Allianz Arena.

Momentum was very much with the Bundesliga pacesetters from the moment Besiktas went down to 10 men, however, and Fabricio would be required again soon after to somehow keep out Lewandowski's header from point-blank range.

Since the inaugural Champions League season they've played in seven editions, failing to get out of the group phase in the first six before this campaign, thus becoming the first Turkish club to win their group. On Tuesday, the Besiktas boss will be without as many as four first-team players due to various short-to-long-term injuries. I'm very happy that we won so comfortably against such a team.

The last meeting between the two sides took place in the 1997-98 Champions League group stage, with Bayern Munich winning 2-0.

Besiktas will get their chance to overturn the massive deficit on March 14 when they face Bayern at home in the second leg of the tie.

"You could see the turnaround from the first day", said Robben, who scored the winning goal in the 2013 Champions League final. The floodgates opened after the break, though, as Kingsley Coman doubled the lead and Mueller grabbed his second midway through the second half.

"I hope my team puts in a top performance to lay the foundations for reaching the quarter-finals".

Besiktas coach Senol Gunes has brought winger Ricardo Quaresma, a Euro 2016 winnner with Portugal, and centre-back Domagoj Vida back into the starting line-up.

"No. That's insane. We have to take it from one round to the next", said Hoeness, later contradicted by Mueller, who said the treble was "possible".

Besiktas became the first ever Turkish side to win a Champions League group after topping a hard Group G earlier in the season. We tried to limit the damage and focus on the second half, but we couldn't manage it.

"On the other hand we must be excited because we have a great opportunity to play a massive game against a really strong team and to show which is our level".

It was a typically scrappy effort from a player once described on the German Football Federation's Twitter feed as having the elegance of a swan on ice skates.
