ESPN reported the contract will pay Garoppolo up to $90 million the first three years - another National Football League record. There has been talk about tagging him and trading him, but that $34.5 million deal over one year would probably be too much for another team to handle while giving up a lot of resources. "Now the challenge is getting Jimmy signed". We're working hard toward that.

This Garoppolo deal impacts John Elway and the Broncos but I don't think it changes much in terms of what we already knew.

Of course, the details that emerge in the following hours and days will make the contract clearer, as the guaranteed money is what matters most. Flacco is just among that group and everyone needs to get used to it. It would be in most cases, but there are also rare exceptions such as a transcendent talent.

Considered one of the better QB options in the 2014 draft class, Garoppolo was selected by New England in the fourth round and was expected to be incumbent Tom Brady's apprentice, and take the reins from him once the five-time Super Bowl champion retired.

Because Garoppolo spent the first half of the season with the Patriots and then landed with the 49ers and the NFC in the trade, he met both criteria to earn the bonuses.

The million-dollar looks were the cherry on top of a franchise-altering trade that gave the 49ers the most important piece to turn around their organization. In the process, the 49ers will make Garoppolo the highest-paid player in the NFL. Alex Reimer of WEEI radio has been suspended indefinitely for calling Vivian, Brady's five-year-old daughter, an "annoying little pissant" live on air.

If Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr can break the bank, why not Garoppolo? Which is to say they believe Garoppolo is the type of quarterback who can elevate the players around him and be the focal point of a team that competes for championships on a consistent basis.

Garoppolo's first public comment on the contract came via an Instagram picture of him celebrating in a game last season with center Daniel Kilgore, accompanied by a caption that simply said: "Mood". The salary cap is expected to take another hike in 2018, potentially to $178 million, which would naturally cause quarterback prices to rise.
