Footage shot at a Muslim-dominated Buddan colony at Balram Gate, where the clashes occurred on Friday before the violence took place, shows youths with the national flag shouting slogans "Hindustan Mein Rehna Hoga, Toh Vande Matram Kehna Hoga" (If one wants to stay in India, he has to chant Vande Mataram). Fire tenders were rushed to douse the fire.

According to sources, some people were also injured in the incident and a number of vehicles and shops were vandalised.

"On Friday, communal violence broke out on the Republic Day during the Rs Tiranga Yatra" in which a youth was killed and several others were injured.

While nine accused have been arrested on charges of murder and rioting, 39 have been arrested for disruption of law and order situation, which include those who torched buses and shops.

A Special Investigative Team has been formed to arrest the others accused in the violence.

So far, 80 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. To maintain peace in the district, State police directorate had already dispatched five additional companies of reserve force including Central Para Military Force to assist the local police.

However, internet services have been suspended till 10 pm on in trouble-torn areas in western UP, where a curfew was imposed after clashes, to prevent the spread of rumours on social media.

IG Sanjeev Kumar too said, "The situation is under control now".

He added the police was trying to make people "understand communal bonhomie".

Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said that the situation was under control but tense. "Sufficient police personnel have been deployed".

Police said three Scorpio SUVs, two Magic passenger transport vehicles and a truck were also targeted by the mob on the Mathura-Bareilly highway. "Fire brigade was called to douse the flames".

Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and state urban development minister Suresh Khanna condemned the violence and said strict action will be taken against those found guilty. He said our party was not involved in the clash. It seems the incident was not pre-planned but was a spontaneous one.

The unruly crowd also set afire a kiosk near a petrol pump and a waste dump.
