Rep. Joe Kennedy III to give Democratic response after State of the Union

U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy will represent the Democratic Party to deliver a response to U.S. President Donald Trump's State of the Union (SOTU) address next week, the Democratic Party announced Friday. He's the son of Joseph P. Kennedy II and grandson of Robert F. Kennedy.

They say Kennedy is "a relentless fighter for working Americans".

Kennedy, 37, is a third-term congressman often considered a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Kennedy, of Brookline, will appear as a blast from the Democratic Party past, but also as a fresh face on a national platform that could have the power to galvanize voters.

Said Kennedy in a statement: "From health care to economic justice to civil rights, the Democratic agenda stands in powerful contrast to President Trump's broken promises to American families".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., offered praise for Kennedy and Guzman.

After Kennedy ripped Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) for calling the death of Obamacare an "act of mercy", Kennedy characterized it as an "act of malice".

But when Trump takes the stage on Tuesday, he's expected to issue a call for a $1 trillion infrastructure package and pitch a sweeping framework for overhauling the nation's immigration system.

Trump is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Kennedy has been floated as a potential 2020 presidential candidate and political commentators have long pinned hopes for a Kennedy revival in Washington DC on his shoulders.
