The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that workers at the site outside Dyersville, Iowa, found the damage Tuesday morning and were still assessing the costs and needed repairs.

However, Steffen noted that "it's never been this severe", describing how the vehicle tore deep gashes up to four inches deep into the center and left field.

"Whoever did it was really able to dig in", he said.

It was one of the most famous fields in film history: the baseball diamond Kevin Costner's character Ray built in 1989's Field of Dreams, haunted by the ghosts of long-dead sportsmen.

Stillman has set up a GoFundMe page to raise $15,000 to fix the field before opening day, April 1.

"It's disappointing that this would happen at this time", Steffen said.

Steffen said they'll have to wait until spring to see how much of the field they'll have to tear up to make fixes. "We won't be able to do anything for months".

Stillman plans to keep the field accessible as normal during the repairs. We can not fathom why a soul on this planet would desecrate this holy ground, ' the Field of Dreams Movie Site wrote on Facebook.

There are no security cameras monitoring the field so officials have limited information regarding the vandals and, although police have been notified, it will be up to the owners of the field to foot the bill. The page has now raised $2,363 toward its $15,000 goal.
