DeMarcus Cousins Suffers Torn Achilles

New Orleans Pelicans center De Marcus Cousins lies on the court after injuring his left achilles tendon according to the team in the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Houston Rockets in New Orleans Friday Jan. 26 2018

Is New Orleans being overlooked as a free agent destination for LeBron James?

But the win came at a price that the Pelican can't afford-DeMarcus Cousins.

Cousins had to be helped off the court after the fall, which occurred after he went for a rebound on his own missed free throw in the final seconds.

The fear with non-contact injuries such as this is an Achilles tear. His status will be officially confirmed after an MRI on Saturday.

It's hard to paint what the rest of the season will look like for the Pelicans.

"We're scared about it", Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters postgame regarding Cousins' injury. We'll just have to wait and see what the future is like for Cousins. That's the tough part. "Like I said, we just have to keep going".

"We just have to keep going", Davis said.

Together, Cousins and Davis are averaging 51.9 points, 23.3 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 3.6 blocks and 2.8 steals per game. He had 44 points, 24 assists, and 10 rebounds in a single game recently.

"I feel frightful for him", added Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry, via ESPN.

Gentry noted "the improvements in all areas that he's made on and off the court", and said Cousins is "a guy that's trying to better himself". To me he was having as good a year as anybody in the league. Miller knocked down big three-point baskets when the Pelicans needed them particularly early in the fourth quarter when the Rockets started threatening.

But, the Rockets wouldn't go away.

Remarkably, Cousins was featured in New Orleans' nine most-used lineups, and the Pelicans don't have a single five-man group that has logged more than 45 minutes without Cousins this season.

Jrue Holiday described Friday's 115-113 victory over the Houston Rockets as "bitter sweet". With their victory, the Pelicans improved to 27-21 overall, putting them just one game back of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the fifth-seed.

Mario Chalmers had 17 points and 10 assists, Jarrell Martin also scored 17 points and Dillon Brooks had 15 for the Grizzlies. The most obvious candidate for a spot is Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George, a frontcourt player (albeit admittedly a very different one) was quite a significant snub in the first place. Before that, they were in the middle of another three-game winning streak.

Anthony Davis added 27 points for the Pelicans.
