Major Averages Close Mixed For Second Consecutive Session - US Commentary

Utilities (+1.5%), health care (+0.9%) and telecom services (+0.7%) finished at the top of today's sector standings, while energy (-0.8%) was easily the weakest as WTI crude oil reversed recent gains to settle 0.2% lower at $65.51/bbl following a sharp upward move in the US dollar.

The earnings helped investors looked beyond data that showed US economic growth unexpectedly slowed in the fourth quarter, due to a surge in imports. The S&P 500 jumped 1.2 per cent, its biggest daily percentage gain since March 1.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index unofficially closed up 35.21 points, or 0.22 per cent, at 16,239.22.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is one of several indices created by Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow.

Twitter jumped 9.5 per cent following an endorsement by Citron Research, which often bets against companies, but said it recommended buying shares of the social media company. On the Nasdaq, 1,451 issues rose and 1,403 fell.

"The beat rates and growth rates are as good as we have measured for these 133 companies in any earnings season over the past five years", said Nick Raich, CEO of The Earnings Scout, in a note.

Buoyed by AbbVie, the S&P healthcare index gained 2.17 per cent, scored its best day since November 2016 and was the best performer among the 11 major S&P sectors.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 140.67 points, or 0.5 percent, to 26,392.79. Benchmark 10-year notes last fell 11/32 in price to yield 2.6599 percent, from 2.621 per cent late on Thursday. Intel also gave a strong sales outlook.

The first quarter earnings for 2018 are also therefore rising.

AbbVie (ABBV.N) rose 6.8 percent after reporting upbeat profit on strong sales for its blockbuster drug Humira.

Intel's INTC.O shares surged about 9 percent to their highest in nearly two decades, after results indicated that the chipmaker's shift to higher-margin data-center business was gaining pace. The Nasdaq composite gained 31 points, or 0.4 percent, to 7,443.

In the bond market, treasuries moved higher in afternoon trading after showing a lack of direction earlier in the day.
